Europe

Europe is the second smallest continent in the world and the third in population.

Europe is the cradle of Occidental culture. The fall of the Roman Empire marked the end of the Ancient Age and the beginning of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance led Europe, and finally the rest of the world, to the Modern Age. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, European countries controlled most of Africa, America, and much of Asia, and later also Oceania.

The Industrial Revolution, led to a radical change in the economic, cultural and social fields in Occidental Europe, and later in the rest of the world. The First World War and the Second World War led to a decline in Europe's dominance in world affairs when the United States and the Soviet Union took the preeminence. After the wars the European Union was formed in Occidental Europe, which has expanded to the east since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
